Zane R. Hays, vice president for instructional services as Northeastern Junior College, died Thursday morning in a Sterling hospital. He was56.
Mr. Hays was stricken while at the college and taken to Logan County Hospital for medical treatment for a heart attack.
He had recorded 31 years of service to the college, joining the staff in January 1950.
Memorial services will be conducted 11 a.m., Monday from the Chaney-Walters Funeral Home, the Rev. Roy Plummer officiating.
Mr. Hays began his three decades at the college as a business division instructor and was track coach for two years. He was named business manager in 1954, a position he held until 1961 when he became dean of faculty and assistant president.
Two years ago Mr. Hays was named vice president for instructional services and assisted in the transition when Dr. Marvin Weiss be came college president, succeeding E.S. French who retired after 30 years as college president.
Mr. Hays was instrumental in developing the curriculum for on-campus as well as off-campus instruction and offered suggestions to the college administration and governing board regarding employment of staff and worked closely with the Northeastern Junior College Faculty Association, the administration and board during contract negotiations.
Mr. Hays was born Jan. 21, 1926 in Glade, Kan., the son of
Leslie Houston and Ethel Parker Hays. He graduated from Greeley, Colo., High School in 1943 and entered Colorado State College of Education, now the University of Northern Colorado.
In March 1944, he enter the U.S. Navy and served during World War II until July 1946, returning to CSCE where he graduated with a bachelor'sDuring his college years, Mr. Hays married Jenice Sutherland on March 14, 1948 in Greeley.
He joined the Northeastern Junior College staff in 1950 and during the summers of 1950 through 1953 attended CSCE where he earned his master's degree in business education, and for two summers (1962-63) took advanced study in higher education at the University of California, Berkeley.
Mr. Hays served as officer in various educational associations including first president of Colorado Association of Higher Education as well as Colorado Association of Instructional Deans (junior colleges) and is past president of Colorado Business Education Association and the Business Education degree in business education
He also served as secretary of the Northeastern Junior College Faculty Association and for almost a quarter of a century was recording secretary of the Northeastern Junior College Governing Board.
Mr. Hays was appointed to various task force policy development committees for the Colorado Commission on Higher Education and the State Board for Community Colleges and Occupational Education and served on the blue ribbon community college study commission.
In the area of community service, Mr. Hays is chairman of the City of Sterling Planning Commission and a member of the Logan County Planning Commission and Logan County Board of Adjustments.

He assisted in the Logan County Nurse Scholarship
Association program and served as treasurer of the
Sterling Lions Club.
Mr. Hays was a member of the First Baptist Church, life member of the National Edu cation Association and member of the Colorado Education Association, Mountain-Plains Business Education Association, Delta N Epsilon Fraternity (national hon orary graduate fraternity in business education), Phi Delta Kappa (national honorary fraternity in Educa tion, the Sterling Elks Lodge and former member of the Colorado Business Education Association.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Jenice Hays of 1313 Buchanan; a daughter, Mrs. Gail LaForce of the Air Force Academy; three sons, Dr. Stephen Hays of Rawlins, Wyo., U. David Hays of Fort Bragg, N.C., and Seaman Scott Hays of Orlando, Fla.; his mother, Mrs. Ethel Hays of Sterling; two sisters, Mrs. Opal Cumiey of Sacramento, Calif., and Mrs. Ella Eck hardt of Denver; three brothers, Marion Hays and Carl Hays, both of Denver and Elmo Hays of Greeley and four grandchildren, Richard Hays, Carolyn Hays, Andrew Hays and Nathan LaForce.
