Married Phebe Caruthers Alexander May 27,1847, Rockbridge, Virginia
He was also the one time superintendent
of the Tennessee School for the Deaf in Knoxville, which during the Battle of
Knoxville was used both by the Confederates and Union troops as a hospital. He
sat on his front porch at Cedar Springs and watched the troops from both armies
march past. Many soldiers stopped along the way to get water from him. In
fact, General James Longstreet of the C.S.A. stopped and inquired of him road directions.
He is credited with the restoration of the First Presbyterian Church after the war,
which had been pillaged by the armies.(info from C. Jones)
