CHARLES ROBERT MURPHY:

Charles Robert Murphy was born November 15, 1875 in Unity, Illinois. The son of Robert Pilford Murphy Jr. and Mary Ann Barber Murphy. He was the third son of 6 children.

Charles had a 6th grade education. He had to quit school to work the family farm, which was common in his day. He never stopped learning, inspite of his lack of formal training. He would sit in his favorite chair and read encyclopedias.

Charles and Cora eloped and were married January 25, 1900 in Tuscola, Illinois. The newlyweds lived on a farm in Iona, Illinois.

Children:

Hilburn "Pat" Hugh Murphy (1901-1953)
Harry Leonard Murphy (1904-1953)
Reba Pauline Murphy Susott (1910-2006)

He was then employed as a salesman for the South Bend Malleable Stove Company in South Bend Indiana while the family lived in Arcola, Illinois. Part of his job was to demonstrate how well a stove worked and would literally bake cakes on the Main Streets of nearby towns. Crowds gathered and pictures were taken. The cakes were fluffy, moist and sweet. His secret was to add extra egg whites. He was also known to make the best bisquits.

The family then moved to Kokomo around 1919, where after retiring, he engaged in farming.

After Cora died in 1946, Charles married Hilda Myrtle Frain Nutt, October 6, 1947 at the South Side Christian Church. After Charles died in 1958, Hilda lived in the S. Courtland St. home till she died in 1973.
