William Russell Coates, 80, died Friday, Oct. 30, 2009, in Richmond. Russell was born Aug. 11, 1929, in Richmond, the son of the late Hobson Stanley and Bertha Delano Coates. Russell had retired as a communications engineer with AT&T. After his retirement, he enjoyed many years as a farrier and horseman. Russell was a graduate of the University of Maryland. He was a member of the Masonic lodge in Colonial Beach, and also of the De La Brooke Foxhounds W in southern Maryland. He had deep roots in the Northern Neck of Virginia and a great love of history. He was a vibrant man with a genuine love of life and learning. Russell is survived by his daughters, Karen Ann Coates and her husband, Mark, of Brookneal and Kathereene Coates Berry and her husband, Mike, of Tomball, Texas; four grandchildren, Anne Berry Cooper, Erin Berry Busby, Jacob Michael Berry and Claire Alden Berry; and two great-granddaughters, Taryn and Lenora Busby. He also leaves behind his faithful companion Chester, a border collie. Russell will be greatly missed by many, many friends and loved ones. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, at Nash and Slaw Funeral Home in King George, where a funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3. Burial will be private in St. Peter's Cemetery in Oak Grove. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Haven Shelter and Services Inc. of Richmond County, Box 1267, Warsaw, Va. 22572.
