Jeremiah M. Hoyt married Lois Ann Gray in Marietta, Ohio on February 8, 1844. He enlisted in the Union military as a private on September 2, 1862 in Company H, 7th Ohio Cavalry. He was taken prisoner at Spring Hill, Tennessee on November 28, 1864 and was first sent to Andersonville Prison, before being transferred to Cahaba Prison, Alabama. After his release, he survived the explosion aboard the steamer Sultana on April 27, 1865 and was mustered out on June 9, 1865 at Camp Chase, Ohio.
According to some military records Jeremiah's surname was spelled both Hoyt and Hoit.
