Company G, 133rd Illinois Infantry. He enlisted at age 19 as a private on May 12, 1864 at Carrolton, Green County, Illinois in Company G, 133rd Illinois Infantry. He was 5'6" tall with auburn hair, blue eyes and a light complexion. He was single and his occupation was farmer. He was mustered in on May 31, 1864 at Camp Butler, Illinois and mustered out on September 24, 1864 at Springfield, Illinois. He was a clerk at the Record and Pension Division, appointed from the state of Missouri.

He was married to Gertrude. His will stated he resided at 1449 N Street Northwest in the District of Columbia. One third of his estate was left to his wife, Gertrude E. Bowman. His gold filled watch was left to his nephew Frederick L. Barnes. The remainder of his estate was given to his sister, Joanna Barnes. He also owned a one-quarter lot in Glenwood Cemetery, sites 451, 452 and 453, ¼ lot, Range A, Area F.
