John Green Faris
ca 1885
probably Union Church, Jefferson County, Mississippi
John Green Faris (Farris) was born in 1818 in Lexington, Indiana. He spelled his last name with one 'r' and was irritated with those relatives that spelled it with two 'r's. He and his brother, Thomas, lived on a farm with their father and mother. Their occupation was raising horses and hogs, and feed for them. John traveled to Mississippi when he was a young man. He and others came on a boat to Natchez, and brought horses to sell in Mississippi. From Natchez they traveled on horseback, leading the other horses, and came to McBride, Mississippi. They went to the home of Middleton Kelly and spent a few days, and sold their horses. In the Kelly home was a daughter, Elizabeth. John fell in love with her. On the next trip they made to Mississippi, they were married in the Kelly home. John and Elizabeth had 10 children (photo- courtesy of Pat Stewart).
