Mother's Obituary
Died.
Jane Holloway at the home of her daughter [Jane Burdeau] in Callaway on the eve of Monday, April 21, 1902. Her remains were laid to rest in Rose Hill cemetery on Wednesday, April 23. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Bates who delivered an appropriate sermon at the Episcopal church of which the deceased has for many years been a loyal member.
Mrs. Holloway, or Grandma Holloway as she was generally called, was born near Holywell, North Wales on July 15th, 1819 and therfore in her 83 year. She came to Custer county with her son Abraham and daughter Jane Burdeau in the pioneer days taking a homestead on Stop table west of town on which she made final proof and continued to own until the time of her death, although she had resided here in town with her daughter. However, her life was not always in a secluded spot as we find it here, for many years her husband, James Holloway of Scotland was among the leading actors who portrayed the beauties of Shakespeares great dramas, having received from the noblemen a beautiful gold medal and watch for talent and ability displayed in his work.
The deceased was the mother of ten children, all of whom were noted for their theatrical talent. One of her sons James Holloway is now performing in Scotland with great success. A daughter, Kate Holland is residing in Delavan, Wisconsin, who was for may years, P.T. Barnum's leading lady equestrian as was also her daughter Jane Burdeau and her son Abraham who many of our readers will remember is now with Ringling Bros. circus.
However, it is not amid the pomp and glare of stage life that her noble good character and worth were made known but in the quiet and uneventful walks of life here in Callaway. An ill word for no one, always contented, sympathising with and comforting those around her she won for herself the respect and love of all her acquaintances (The Weekly Tribune, Callaway, Nebraska, Saturday, 26 Apr 1902, page 1)
