MOORHEAD, Iowa -- Joyce Ione "Granny B" Ballantyne, 84, of Moorhead died Saturday, May 9, 2009, at Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center in Dunlap, Iowa.

Services were 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Moorhead, Iowa, with Pastor Carla Johnson officiating. Burial was in Spring Valley Cemetery at Moorhead.

Joyce Ione was born June 9, 1924, in Moorhead, Iowa, the daughter of Laverne "Shorty" and Alice (Ulven) Solberg. She graduated from Moorhead High School in 1942. On Dec. 16, 1943, Joyce married Earl D. Ballantyne and to this union, five children were born. She was a lifelong resident of Moorhead with the exception of one year in Arizona.

Joyce loved and lived life to the fullest. She had a great love for hats and had a very large collection. She enjoyed music, flowers and especially dancing. She always had a fun word for everyone she met. She was employed as a librarian for many years at the Moorhead Library.

Joyce was a member of the Moorhead American Legion Auxiliary for many years and Bethesda Lutheran Church. She also volunteered for the Loess Hills Hospitality Association. Joyce will be missed by all her family and friends.

Survivors include her five children and their spouses, Nancy Jean (Keith) Hinkel of Moorhead, Barbara (Mark) Lorenzen of Charter Oak, Iowa, Carol Lynn (Larry) Carritt of Omaha, Richard (Linda) Ballantyne of Missouri, and Rodney (Cindy) Ballantyne of Missouri Valley, Iowa; 13 grandchildren, Byron, Bryan, Stefani, Wendy, Shelly, Ryan, Staci, Kris, Emily, Amy, Kelly, Beau and Brett; 16 great-grandchildren, Kandace, Matt, Hanna, Khael, Faith, Tyler, Ethan, Abbey, Nathan, Natalie, Samuel, Gracyn, Mike, Jacob, Claire and Lucas; a great-great-grandson, Wyatt; and four brothers and their spouses, Donald (JoAnn) Solberg, Russ (Nola) Solberg, Gordon (Jan) Solberg and Jerry (Sharon) Solberg.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl; and her parents, Laverne and Alice.
