Marsha M. Smith, 56, longtime East End, Superior resident, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, in her home with her family by her side, after a long courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
She was born on March 26, 1952, in Willmar, Minn., to Custer "Andy" and Adeline (Dybedal) Anderson.
She graduated from Superior Senior High in 1971 and later in life received her Certified Nursing Assistant license from the Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College.
Marsha married Mark F. Smith in 1972 in Superior and celebrated 36 years of marriage.
Marsha was employed by the East End Bakery before she became involved with 15 years of home health care. Her recent years were spent working for the Animal Rescue Federation (ARF).
She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Marsha loved caring for animals and helping them get adopted. She enjoyed walking her beloved dog "Abbi" and just cuddling close to her cat "Tiki." She collected bride and groom figurines and loved spending time with family and friends, especially her grandchildren who affectionately called her "Nana."
In addition to her husband Mark, Marsha is survived by one daughter, Wendy C. (Rafael) Barreto, Elk Mound, Wis.; one son, Wayne (Denise) Smith, Superior, WI; one grandson, Antonio Barreto and two granddaughters, Amelia Barreto, Amber Smith; one sister, Cheryl Anderson-Hustad, Osceola, WI.; two brothers, Michael Anderson, Duluth, MN; Jon (Carol) Anderson, Superior, WI and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. January 23, 2009, at Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, 1209 East 5th Street, Superior, WI, with a Scripture Service scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
Visitation will continue at 11:30 a.m. January 24, 2009, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church until the 1:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Fr. James Tobolski as celebrant.
Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery.
Pallbearers for the service will be Bernie Stinger, Ken Kunze, David Smith, David J. Johnson, Mickey MacKenzie and Bob Benson.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dan Hustad and Charlie Johnson.
