Mrs. Susan Armfield Vanwinkle, widow of the late David Vanwinkle, died Wednesday night, about 10 o'clock, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mollie Hobbs, in Hobbs, her death following a long illness that was due to cardiac asthma. Mrs. Vanwinkle's death was not unexpected as her condition had been very critical for several days and for the past two days she was in a state of coma.

Mrs. Vanwinkle, who was 85 years old on her last birthday June 9th, was born in Madison county on a farm three miles southeast of Elwood. She was the daughter of Tilman and Mary Ann (Pickering) Armfield and was the last of a family of nine children, a sister, Mrs. Emma McDermott near Alexandria dying about three weeks ago. The late Mrs. Angeline Moore of Tipton and Dr. T.O. Armfield of Elwood, were sister and brother of Mrs. Vanwinkle.

Mrs. Vanwinkle was married to David Vanwinkle March 26th, 1863, the marriage taking place at the home of the bride's parents southeast of Elwood with Squire Richard Miner officiating. Five children were born to their union, Mrs. Hobbs, Mrs. Angie Leisure, wife of Matt Leisure, Shell Vanwinkle, whose death took place in 1915, Gertrude who died at the age of 13, and Oren at the age of 18. David Vanwinkle died October 14th, 1882, in Henry county, death being due to typhoid fever.

Besides the two daughters, there are four grandchildren; Mrs. Buford Gumm of Lake Water, Florida; Mrs. Robert Simpson, of Elizabethtown, Pa.; and Pearl and Matthew Vanwinkle of Shelbyville.

Mrs. Vanwinkle resided in Tipton from 1890 until 1923 when she went to make her home with the daughter, Mrs. Hobbs following the death of Mr. Hobbs. She was one of the devoted Christian women of the community, a woman whose life was an open book and counted for good in every community. She was a member of the West Street Christian church for many years before going to Hobbs when she placed her membership in the church at that place.
