Ellis Gray Preston, 99, passed away peacefully on Feb. 3, 2005. Ellis was born in Ocean Grove, New Jersey on August 9, 1905. His father, Charles Preston, was a Methodist Minister, which involved several moves for Ellis's family during his childhood. The family settled in Edmonds, Wash. in 1917, where Ellis graduated from high school in 1925. He was an outstanding athlete in football and track and field.
After high school, Ellis worked in the shingle mill of Puget Sound and in the wheat harvests of Big Bend. He married Eleanor Nelson in 1931 in Ephrata, Wash., and they were married for 60 years. From 1931 to 1939 they lived in Chelan Falls where Ellis worked for the Pacific Fruit Company. They moved to Seattle, where Ellis worked for Boeing Aircraft Company during WWII. Ellis and Eleanor ad two sons. The family moved in 1945 to the Methow Valley, where they farmed and worked in the fruit industry.
Ellis retired at the age of 75 and enjoyed an active retirement. He is survived by his special friend, a son, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Ellis was preceded in death by his wife Eleanor and his son Robert.
