Came to Wadesboro at the age of 13 with his parents Charles Daniel and Elizabeth Fenton. He was engaged in the Anson Argus office. Fought with the 14th Regiment of Company C North Carlina Infantry CSA. He enlisted April 22, 1861 in Anson County. He lost his left arm on May 5, 1863. In his young manhood he joined the Old Fellows. He married Maria Eve Smith on December 12, 1867. He and Maria had two children: Victor Fenton and Ila Fenton Covington (Mrs. J. A. Covington). He died in Rockingham, Richmond County, North Carolina. He was brought back to Wadesboro and buried in Eastview Cemetery.
