She was born in Pine Knot on April 11, 1927, the daughter of the late Luther and Savannah Taylor Stephens. In addition to her parents, she is
preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Painter and son-in-law Charles Painter, a son-in-law Robert Smith, four brothers Prince, Paul, Howard and Cleve R. Stephens and a sister Letha Stephens. In June, 1970 she was married to Mr. Donald Hammonds. Ms. Hammonds had worked for National Cash Register in Dayton, Ohio for approximately 18 years, then moved to Clyde, North Carolina where she worked at the Broyhill Baptist Children's Home for more than 20 years. In
1992 she and Donald moved home to Pine Knot where she delved into her favorite pastime, genealogy. She was a member of the McCreary County Historical and Genealogical Society.
