Robert was killed when a crane he was operating toppled over in a river maintenance project near Mountain Lake Park in Garrett Co. MD. He had been a thirteen year Maryland State Roads Commission Employee. He had been dredging the bed of the Little Youghiogheny River East of Mountain Lake Park near the Post Office on Maryland Route 135. He had picked up a load in a clam bucket and when he swung the machine around it toppled over on him. He was pinned under the wreckage for 25 minutes before a large truck and grader could raise the crane from his body.

He was a U. S. Army Veteran 1946-1947.
