James W. Hamby, 79, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009, at St. John's Hospital following a lengthy illness.

He was born Nov. 28, 1929, in Licking, son of William Russell and Eddie Florence Karnes Hamby. He and Wanda Barnhart were married Dec. 15, 1967, at First Assembly of God in O'Fallon.

He was a member of Licking Pentecostal Holiness Church, Licking VFW and American Legion. He served in the Army and fought in the Korean War.

He was a retired carpenter with Carpenters Council of Greater St. Louis.

He enjoyed watching the St. Louis Cardinals and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Rudolph, Otha and Aline Wilkerson.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda of the home; seven children, James L. Hamby, Joseph Hamby and William Hamby of Licking, Kenneth Hamby of Point Hope, Alaska, Michael Barnhart of St. Louis, Rhonda Hamby Fairman of St. Peters and Sandra Hamby Dent of St. Joseph; a brother, Gene Hamby of Canton, Ga.; two sisters, Fern Sutton of Warrenton and Ruby Douglas of Philadelphia, Mo.; 18 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Services were Friday, Oct. 9, at Pentecostal Holiness Church with Pastor Jerry Dodson officiating. Burial was in Licking Cemetery with full military honors.
