James was a son of James & Rebecca (Cunningham) McCormick, who were m. 16 Nov. 1801 in a part of Fairfield Co. that is now Perry Co. James had six siblings growing up on the family farm. James McCormick & Elizabeth Tucker m. on 18 April 1839 in Perry Co. and had five children where they farmed in Monday Creek Twp. Their children were:
Rebecca Ellen McCormick, b. 4 April, 1840, m. Dawson Barnes in 1856 Perry Co. & is bur. in the Old Otterbein Cemetery in Hocking Co. with a marker that says "wife of Dawson Barnes." Secondly, Dawson m. Mary Catherine Palmer, who as a child was listed in the 1850 Monday Creek Twp., Perry Co. census as living with the Hugh & Nancy (Palmer) McCormick family. Hugh McCormick (b. 1811) was a brother of James McCormick.
George G. McCormick b. 18 April, 1842 m. Sarah Catherine Wilson. He d. in the Civil War.
Sally Ann McCormick b. 17 Feb. 1845, d. 14 Feb. 1848.
