"It was February 17, 1908, a blustery snow day in Michigan. Both grandmothers were in the house along with the four children. Kenneth was 4 years and 5 months, Vernon & Violet were 3 years and 3 months and Franklin was 1 year and 1 month.

Their father had saddled the horse and gone for the doctor. The grandmothers - Ruama - Lillian's mother and Elmira - Frank's mother were at the house. My mother said all she remembered was the grandmothers bustling about filling sugar sacks (In those days sugar sacks were made of clothe and were washed and dried to be used for making jelly) with snow and laying them on Lillian's abdomen to stop the bleeding. Violet told me there was lots of blood on the floor - what a last remembrance of her mother. Two baby girls had been born and were wrapped and lying in the waiting crib. But Lillian, their mother had just lost too much blood. So Violet never knew her mother - nor did the other siblings except for Kenneth who was 4 1/2 yrs."
