Hans was born in Sweden. His obit states he was born in Merrysville, DeKalb Co., Missouri, but, actually he came to the United States in 1882 with is widowed mother Bertha Hannson "married name unknown". They settled in Merrysville, DeKalb Co., Missouri where Bertie married Oliver Olson. Hans, with his mother, his adopted father Oliver Olson and two sisters Celia and Margaret, came by covered wagon to Oklahoma Territory about 1892, after the land run of 1891. They settled on 160 acres in the N.W. corner, Iowa township, of Lincoln County. The 1900 census shows Hans living on the Osage Indian Reservation in Oklahoma Territory doing farm labor.

Hans married Agnes Carpenter sometime before 1918. They lived most of their lives in Douglas Co., KS.
