Obituary
Brainerd T. Spencer
Such was his worth our loss is such
We cannot love too well or grieve too much.
Spectator
Died on April 15 at 6:30AM at Crescent City, Florida, Brainerd T. Spencer. This sad news brought sincere grief to many friends who had cherished the hope that the balmy air of Florida would check the insidious disease which for several months had ravaged the body of our departed friend. Alas! For human hopes and desires. In the morning of his life the angel of the last hour lightly touched him with his wing and carried him to eternal rest. How beautiful his last moments on earth! With eves and spirit bright, even unto the revelation of the portals of eternity, he beheld for the last time the cherished wife, whose devotion, unsurpassed, made the period of his sickness days of happiness and with tender and smiling glance he bade her a long and fond farewell and calmly went to sleep to wake no more. His mortal remains now repose with his children in the romantic shades of Oak Hill.

The death of our beloved friend will be sincerely regretted by all who knew and appreciated his engaging manners, his dutiful conduct and kindness to his friends and uprightness toward all. These traits that endeared him to all will forever cause the memory of our friend to be held in affectionate remembrance and though he was suddenly taken away to rest in the bosom of God, he still lives and will always live for his virtues and worth will never be forgotten. In friendship he was ever steadfast and true and never did unkind words toward friend pass his lips. When had he a friend whose cares were not his, whose joys he did not share?

In his long official life he was ever faithful and diligence in the discharge of his duties and in military circles (National Rifles) he showed an aptitude for precision in drill and an appreciation of discipline that was an inheritance of his early and more active military life when in the ardor of youth he took up arm in the defense of the Union. Farewell, a long farewell, until we meet again!
