Alfred grew up in the Pleasant Ridge community in Perkins County. He attended Pleasant Ridge School and graduated from Lemmon High School in 1931. As a young man, he worked a variety of jobs, including in a Haynes, North Dakota coal mine, on a Montana sheep ranch and a variety of Washington orchards.
He married Harriet Anderson in 1943 and in 1944, he and Harriet purchase a farm near Bison from Harriet's father. Harriet died in 1961.
In 1962, Alfred married Leoda Seiler and they worked the farm until Alfred retired in 1989. In January, 1991, they moved to a home in town.
