William Berry Huddleston was a farmer in Lamar, AL, and he also owned and operated a general store there. In 1868, on a trip to purchase new stock for the store, he had to cross the Tallapoosa River on a ferry. On returning, before the boat reached the docking place, for some unknown reason Berry fell off the boat and into the river. He could not swim, and before any rescue attempts could reach him he had drowned.
