Jens A. Houtwed, son of Nels and Ollie (Petersen) Houtwed, was born November 17, 1905, at Ruskin, Nebraska, and passed away September 4, 1990, at Bethseda Care Center in Aurora, Nebraska, at the age of 84 years, 9 months and 18 days. He was baptized and confirmed in Bethany Lutheran Church in Ruskin.

He married Mabel Brandt August 5, 1928, and they farmed in the Ruskin community for 50 years. Mabel died a few weeks after they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. On March 4, 1979, he married Katherine Jensen and lived at the Good Samaritan Village in Hastings. They resided there eleven years until a recent illness resulted in the necessity of his move to a care home. Jens was a loving husband and a caring father.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Agnes Thayer, and a brother, Chris.

Survivors include his wife, Katherine; one son, Dewane of Ruskin; two daughters, Arlene Hansen of Aurora and Willa Houtwed of Falls Church, Virginia; two step-daughters, Loryne Moore of Exeter and Heral Jean Schultz of Superior; 15 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and one sister, Ellen Larsen of Kearney.

Funeral services were held Friday, September 7, 1990, at 10:30 a.m. from the Bethany Lutheran Church in Ruskin, Nebraska, with Rev. Harry A. Carlsen pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Hastings, Nebraska, officiating. Music was provided by soloist, Judy Mikkelsen, singing "What A Friend We Have In Jesus," and congregational hymns of "Trust and Obey" and "I Need Thee Every Hour" with Dorcas Judy as organist and accompanist. Casketbearers were Steve, David, Bob and Kevin Houtwed, Gary Hansen and Robin Wentworth. Honorary pallbearers were Eilert Nielsen, Lewis Whitaker, Cedric Andersen, Alfred Sorensen, Jack Largent and Beck Kaldahl. Burial was in the Spring Creek Cemetery near Ruskin. Megrue-Price Funeral Home of Superior was in charge of the arrangements.
