George lived with his daughter, Hanna Barnhart Wampler until he died in 1922 in Carthage. Hanna and her husband, Benjamin Franklin Wampler are both buried, as is George Barnhart's sons, Benjamin Franklin Barnhart and George William "Will," in Park Cemetery.

George was married to Mary Flora (1837-1935), of Wirtz, Franklin Co., VA, on 16 Dec 1858.
