Mrs. Tully Birdsong, 89, died Thursday, July 4, at her home on Sam Davis Avenue after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were conducted at 3 o'clock Saturday at Bennett-May Chapel with the Rev. Billy Craighead and Rev. J. C. Elkins officiating. Interment was in Maplewood Cemetery.
Mrs. Birdsong, the former Miss Mae Abernathy, was the daughter of the late M. T. Abernathy and Annie Birdsong Abernathy of the Bethesda community. A native of Giles County, born July 13, 1878, she was educated at Giles College and received the M. E. L. degree from Martin College in 1897. She was married to the late Tully Birdsong, son of Thomas Logan and Adelaide Birdsong, in 1897.
Mr. and Mrs. Birdsong lived in their home place, the former Bishop Paine residence in the Bunker Hill community, until the death of Mr. Birdsong. In 1915 she moved with her nine children to Pulaski.
Mrs. Birdsong was a talented musician, having served at one time as organist of the Bethesda Methodist Church and later as organist for First Methodist Church in Pulaski. She also was a member of the choir at First Methodist. She taught school in Giles County at Abernathy School, Woodlawn, Anthony Hill and Pulaski Elementary. She was a member of the Martin College faculty in 1922-23.
Mrs. Birdsong was a charter member of the Twentieth Century Literary Club and the Gay-Nineties Club, a life member of the Woman's Society of Christian Service, having served that organization as treasurer for fourteen years. She also was an active member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
