Son of Salmon and Susannah (Proctor) Ward; twin brother to Edwin R Ward. He was married 3 times and had 6 children and 5 step children.
Edgar's first wife, Amy (Stevens) Ward died August 15, 1863. They had 2 children together, Lincoln and Amy. Edgar enlisted in the Army in December 1863.

On March 17, 1864 Edgar married his brother's widow, Roseanna McCord Ward. His wife had died and she had lost her husband, and they combined both of their families to make one large family. Edgar raised his brother's children as his own and he and Roseanna had four together. Of the eleven children, nine reached adulthood.
Roseanna died May 19, 1888.
On July 9, 1888, he married Mrs Emma Collins, widow of Hezekiah Collins. Emma was the daughter of Aaron and Polly Thompson. She died in 1916 and is buried with her first husband.

Enlisted in Union Army, December 10th, 1863 at Boscobel, WI. Served until September 29,1865. Was a member of Co. B 33rd Regt and transferred to Co. B 11th WI. Vol. Inf. At the time of his discharge he was afflicted with sore eyes, which grew worse and at times he would confine himself to a dark room. He lost his sight for some time and then partially recovered.
