Dan was born on Dec. 12, 1941, in Albion. He was one of seven children of Louis Joseph Carey, his first wife Eva Libby Carey, and his second wife Carolyn Wieden Carey. After graduating from Waterville High School in 1960, Dan attended Bentley College in Waltham, Mass., majoring in accounting.
He married Mary Lou Reny, with whom he had his five children, in August 1964. They were divorced in August 2000. Dan then married Viola Marie Barker on March 18, 2001. Dan served in the Air Force from 1964 through 1968 at Topsham Air Force Base in Maine. After moving back to Waterville in 1969, Dan joined the family business at Kennebec Building Supply as head bookkeeper/accountant from where he retired in 2008.
Dan was predeceased by his father, Louis; his mother, Eva; his stepmother, Carolyn; his brother, David; his sister, Mary Beth and his stepson, Ronald Frazier.
Surviving family members include his wife, Viola and their dog, Tabby; his children: Michelle Owens and her husband, Richard, of Sandown, N.H., Louis and his significant other, Cindy MacDonald, of Waterville, Eva Todd and her husband, Chris, of Live Oak, Calif., Daniel Jr. and his wife, Heather, of Waterville and Tammy Reynolds and her husband, Steve, of Winslow; his grandchildren, Chris and Todd Owens, Louis Carey Jr., Cameron and CJ Todd, Zachary and Sabrina Carey, and Raven and Taylor Reynolds; great-grandson Chris Owens Jr.; his stepchildren and their families: Randall Frazier and his wife, Karen, of Murray, Ky., Michael Frazier and his wife, Jackie of Shorewood, Ill., Douglas Frazier and his wife, Amy, of Decatur, Ill., and Lance Lehnan of Nokomis, Ill.; his siblings, Carlton and his wife, Kay, of Waterville, Alan and his wife, Deborah, of Readfield, Margaret Soucy and her husband, Lester, of Waterville and Paul and his wife, Patricia, of Ellsworth; goddaughters Gale Carey Mahoney of Willimantic, Conn., Heather Jolicoeur LeClair of Waterville and Tracy Soucy McLaughlin of Dayton; several nieces and nephews and their families; extended family; and special niece and nephew, Serena and David Pugsley of Biloxi, Miss.
