By 1837 he and his two younger siblings and parents were living in Allen Co, Ohio where he met and married his wife, Mary Lawrence, 8 Aug 1858 in Marysville, Allen Co, Ohio. John joined the 118th Ohio Infantry (Company B)on August 14, 1862 along with his father-in-law, Ezekiel Lawrence. He was discharged on December 2, 1864 (Pension Certificate #103288). Sometime between 1870 and 1880 he moved his family to Huntington, Huntington Co, Indiana. His father-in-law also moved to Huntington Co, Indiana during the same timeframe.
