Alice Maria was born in Wallsburg, Wasatch County, Utah to Moses Moroni Mecham and Almira Jane Duke on March 31, 1881.
She was the fourth child of ten. When she was three years old the family moved to Riverdale, Uintah County, Utah which was later named Jensen, Utah.
The family made their home in a two room cabin built by Moses on Ashley Creek. Alice's mother died when Alice was only thirteen years old.
Alice taught school in Jensen until the time of her marriage in 1902.
Her husband Bernard Gardner said she sang like an angel.
Just prior to her marriage she suffered an illness (erysipelas) which made her hair fall out, but by the time she was wed her hair was long enough to turn under with a curling iron.
Bernard and Alice were married in Jensen April 18, 1902.
They had 10 children:

Olen
Bernard Clifford
Elma (Pem)
Arthur Moroni
Alton Ford
Ruth
Rhae
Lois
and Edward who was stillborn.
