Born in Shelby County, Texas to Emma and George Anson Hayden. One month after the United States entered WW I Carlton registered for the military draft at Precinct 14, Shelby County. His registration card revealed that he was single, self-employed as a farmer and claimed exemption to the draft due to physical problems. He was described as of medium height and built with brown eyes and dark hair. He was inducted into the US Army in Center, Texas June 14, 1918 and served with the Field Artillery Remount Depot, Camp Jackson South, Carolina. Honorably discharged January 23, 1919 and awarded the World War I Victory Medal. Served as a rural mail carrier for many years and was a member of the Rural Letter Carriers Association. Long time member of the First Baptist Church of Tenaha. Passed 13 days before his 101st birthday. He and wife Ula Luray Porter (married 1928) rest in the Restland Cemetery, Tenaha, Texas. Day is done, God is nigh.
