Mr. Lionel George Boulerice, age 81 years, died Friday evening, Oct. 16, 2009, at his Hinesburg Road Home in South Burlington, following a long and courageous battle with colon cancer, with his loving family by his side.

Born in Chazy, N.Y. on Sept. 27, 1928, he was the son of the late Henry and Rose (Couture) Boulerice. At an early age, Lionel moved with his family to Swanton where they farmed for many years. He attended the former St. Anne's Academy and on July 26, 1952, married the former Pauline Bergeron, who survives him.

Over the past 24 years, Lionel and Pauline have lived in the Chittenden County area. Prior to that, they resided an equal number of years in St. Albans and were parishioners of The Church of the Immaculate Conception - St. Mary's Parish. He was also a former member of the Burlington Lodge of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.

Lionel's work experience began early on with farming and continued with the H.P Hood Company for 23 years, until its closing in the early 1980s. He retired after a 7-½ year association with IBM of Essex Junction. At the time of his death, Lionel and Pauline were members of both St. John Vianney and The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Parishes.

Lionel will always be remembered for his strong Catholic faith, his love of family and friends, and especially his unique sense of humor, quick wit and the playing of practical jokes. He enjoyed gardening and cards, especially "500," and was known affectionately to his grandchildren as "Candy Poppy."

In addition to his wife, Pauline, of 57 years, Lionel leaves his five children: Anita Boulerice Lavoie and her former husband, John, and his wife, Gwen, Michael Boulerice and his wife, Sherry, Marcel Boulerice and wife, Susan, Robert Boulerice and his wife, Melissa, all of St. Albans, and Donald J. Boulerice of South Burlington; three siblings, Leona Pigeon of Burlington, Arthur Boulerice and wife, Marguerite, of Swanton and Jeanne Begnoche of St. Albans. Also surviving are brothers and sisters-in-law, Conrad Bergeron of Williston, Rita Gamache of St. Albans, Raymond Breton of Highgate Center, Maurice Benjamin of Winooski, Clemence Bergeron of Winooski and Gilberta Bergeron of Burlington; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Helen Breton, Irene Laroche and Rita Benjamin; his father and mother-in-law, Joseph and Flora Bergeron; brothers and sisters-in-law, Raymond Bergeron, Armand Bergeron, Theresa and Jerome Bouchard, Marie - Anne Bergeron, Daniel Gamache, Marcel Pigeon, Ronald Begnoche and Gerald Laroche.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, at 11 a.m. from St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church, Hinesburg Road, South Burlington. Father Bernard E. Gaudreau will be the celebrant and homilist. The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at the Boulerice family lot in Resurrection Park Cemetery. Friends may call at The Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton, on Tuesday, from 4 to 8 p.m.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial was concelebrated Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, at 11 a.m. from St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church, South Burlington. Father Bernard E. Gaudreau was the principle celebrant and homilist. Concelebrating was Father Timothy Sullivan. Assisting as Deacon of the Word was The Reverend Mr. William Glinka and as Deacon of the Altar, The Reverend Mr. Duane Langlois. Serving as Ministers of the Altar were Linda Previti, Keith Marston and Charles Bombard. Music was provided by Lionel's nieces, Lucy Bergeron Dupont as soloist and accompanied by organist Jane Bergeron O'Keefe.

The White Funeral Pall was draped over Lionel's casket by his daughter, Anita Boulerice Lavoie, and the Crucifix placed by his wife, Pauline Bergeron Boulerice. Readings from The Old and New Testament were proclaimed by granddaughters, Angela Phillip and Jodi Young. The Offertory Gifts were presented by granddaughters, Nicole, Kiley and Katie Boulerice and Heather Young. Following communion Special Words of Remembrance were shared by son Michael Boulerice. Among the large delegations in attendance were representatives from the, St. Albans City and Town Offices, Swanton Village and Town Offices, Energizer, Seventh Generation, Visiting Nurse Association, Franklin-Grand Isle Foster Grandparent Program, Northwestern Medical Center and Auxiliary, Northwest Counseling and Support Services, Tom Hungerford Insurance, Bellows Free Academy- St. Albans, Highgate School District, Catholic Daughters of America, J. Rainville & Sons, IBM, The Peoples Trust Company, GTM Electric, The Handy Group, Swanton Village Green Apartments, Collins Perley Sports Center, Swanton Rexall, Kevin's Smiths Sports Connection, Bourdeau Brothers, Rachel's Styling Studio, Total Yard Care and Snowplowing, The Burlington Housing Authority and the parish communities of St. John Vianney, Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Saint Francis Xavier and Nativity / Saint Louis. The Rite of Committal and Interment followed at the Boulerice family lot in Resurrection Park Cemetery, South Burlington with Father Gaudreau reading the committal prayers. The Honorary Bearers escorting Lionel's casket were his sons, Michael, Marcel and Robert Boulerice and grandson, Aaron Barbeau. The Active Bearers all grandsons were, John Lavoie II, Brett Boulerice, Jacob Boulerice, Brian Boulerice, Rob Montgomery and Philip Montgomery. Following The Prayers of Committal a reception was held for family and friends in the Saint John Vianney Parish Center. On Tuesday afternoon during the family visitation period a Vigil Prayer Service was led by longtime family friend, The Reverend Monsignor Thomas J. Ball, Rector of The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
