Lelah was born to Joseph and Mary Jane Austin in the small mining town of Crestone Colorado. The family lived in several different towns in Southern Colorado, following where the jobs would take them. She married James Morrissey in Ridgway Colorado in 1902 and soon thereafter relocated to Arizona.
