Joseph Hutchinson Brittain was born on February 3, 1816 in
Beaver County, Pennsylvania to Jeremiah and Elizabeth (Hutchinson) Brittain. He married Belinda Clark on October 4, 1838. They were the parents of Rev. Jeremiah Reed, Lydia June, William Clark, Elizabeth Easter, and Joseph Isaiah. He died in on March 19, 1900 in East Palestine, Ohio.

The National Encyclopedia of American Biography, Vol. 22, pages 199-200 refers to Joseph Sr. as "a farmer and county official, and a prominent abolitionist".

He wrote this affadavit shortly before his death:

'To whom it may concern: I Joseph Brittain of the State of Ohio, Columbiana, USA do hereby certify that I am the father of the following children: Rev. Jeremiah Reed Brittain, DD, Greenville, PA; Mrs. Lydia J. Chamberlain, East Palestine, OH; Dr. William C. Brittain, Cochranton, PA; Mrs. Elizabeth Andre, New Brighton, PA; Joseph I. Brittain, East Palestine, OH. And that my father's name was Jeremiah Brittain, b. 1774, died on his farm known as Contentment about 4 miles from the town of New Brighton, PA. I further certify that his father's name, my grandfather was Samuel Brittain, b. 9 Mar 1750, and that the said Samuel Brittain served in the Reovlutionary War known as the American War for Independence. That he enlisted as a private in Captain McCalla's Company 2nd Battalion, Bucks Co., PA Associators Colonel John Beatty and that he enlisted on the 21st day of August 1775...Sworn to on this 8th day of Ocotber 1899. Signed Joseph Brittain.'"
