DEATH CLAIMS ANOTHER PIONEER
Useful Career of John Aiken is Brought to Close

His Demise Occurred at Lake George Tuesday Morning as a Result of Infirmities of Old Age

Was a Pominent Citizen

John Aiken, Sr president of the Fort Wayne Coal company, a pioneer settler of Allen county, and all his life a prominent factor in local affairs, died at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning as the result of a general breakdown and the infirmities of old age. He had been seriously ill for less than a month and a few days ago he went to the summer home of his son, Judge John Aiken at Lake George in the hope that the change would prove beneficial. It was here that his demise occurred. Had he lived until August, he would have been seventy-five years old.

Mr Aiken was born in Washington county, Penns in 1828 but moved in childhood to Jefferson, O where he grew to manhood. He was married in Ohio in 1851 to Miss Martha Trainer who still survives him. In 1862, Mr Aiken moved with his family to Allen county, settling on a farm in Lafayette township. He continued farming in the county until 1890, when he moved with his wife to Scott, O where he engaged in the milling business. The couple returned to Fort Wayne about two years ago and made their home with their daughter Mrs Anna Larrimore at Wells and Second streets.

About the time of his return, Mr Aiken organized the Fort Wayne Coal company and was elected its president. The deceased was an intensely active man and wether in his own business or in politics or local affairs, he always took a leading part. He was a democrat in politics and in 1888(?) he was elected county appraiser, a place afterward abolished. He held the officer for two years. He was a life long member of the Methodist Episcopal church and at times he preached in the churches of Allen county and elsewhere. He lived as he believed and in all the county or city no man was respected more highly or had the greater confidence of his friends and acquaintances. He was a good, upright man as well as a good and useful citizen.

In addition to the widow, the following children survive the dead man: Mrs Ida Shepler of Raleigh, Ind; James Aiken of Allen county, Mrs Jennie Wilson of Roanoke; Mrs Minnie Beard of Allen county; RL Aiken of Raleigh, Ind; Mrs Anna Larrimore and Mrs Ella Dixon, with the young son, Judge John II Aiken of this city. There is also a brother James Aiken of Jewett, O and another Robert Aiken of Amsterdam, O and two sisters Mrs Jane Roberts and Mrs Anna Dennis.

The remains were brought to Fort Wayne last night in charge of Klaehn & Melching, the undertakers. The body was removed to the home of Mrs Larimore at Wells and Second streets. The hour for the funeral has not yet been set.
