Margaret Coffey was the youngest of eleven children born to William Coffey Jr. (1812-1893) and his wife Margaret Robbins Coffey (1816-1882). She grew up on her parents' farm "on Buffaloe Creek" in the upper Yadkin River Valley known as Happy Valley, and it was at her family's house on March 28, 1878 that she married her cousin, Thomas Clingman Coffey (1858-1932). The couple lived on a farm in Happy Valley and raised four children: Loula Victoria ( b. 1883), Finley Houck (b. 1886), Jesse Clingman (b. 1890), and Margaret Elizabeth ("Bessie", b. 1897). Margaret Coffey Coffey died of bronchial pneumonia at the age of 73.
