Ernest "Pete" William Peters, resident of Norman, passed away Monday, October 12, 2009, at Brookhaven Extensive Care. He was 88.

Ernest was born on February 10, 1921 to John and Mary Peters in Indianola, Nebraska.

He graduated from Wann High School in 1940 and entered the United States Army at Fort Sill, Oklahoma in January of 1943. He served in the 20th Armored Division as a tank driver in Germany in World War II, and was instrumental in the liberation of the Jewish survivors at the concentration camp at Dachau.

He returned from the war and married the love of his life, Jessie Grace Miller on May 16, 1946 in Blackwell, Oklahoma. He attended Oklahoma A -- M College in Stillwater, and received his certification in Radio and Electronics from the School of Technical Training Division of Engineering in 1948. He was employed by Continental Oil Company in Ponca City in the Geophysics Department until his retirement in 1980. He was a resident of Ponca City for 52 years, relocating with Jessie in 2006 to be closer to his children.Ernest was committed to his family and spent any time he had away from work caring for them. His wife and his two daughters were his highest priorities and his greatest source of pride. He was a devoted Christian and originally attended First Baptist Church, and then was a founding member of Northeast Baptist Church in Ponca City, OK.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jessie of Norman,OK; daughters: Kathleen Baker and her husband Larry of Moore, OK, Karen Saunkeah and her husband Tom of Norman, OK; grandsons: Joshua Baker and his wife Channing, Peter Baker and his wife Tessa all of Moore; and eight great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Peters, and brothers Carl, Henry, Roy, Rex and Ray, and sisters Lenora, Ruth, Mary, Sara, and Anna.Casketbearers will be Tom Saunkeah, Larry Baker, Joshua Baker, Peter Baker, Glenn Peters and Ed Peters. Honorary Casketbearers will be Jay Stewart, and Joe Hoyle.
