Anne Gardiner Tyler Raney, 89, fortified with the sacraments of the Catholic Church, passed away on October 14, 2009 at home in Little Rock, Arkansas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clay Hayes Raney; mother, Mary Elizabeth Parker Tyler; father, John Tyler; sister, Elizabeth Parker Tyler; and her great-granddaughter, Anne Elizabeth Ball. She is survived by her son, John Tyler Raney (Catherine); daughters Mary Brannan Hiegel (Frank); Teresa Gardiner Ball (Raymond); Anne Saint George Tucker Raney; and, Elizabeth Gilmer Whitaker (David). She was the proud grandmother of 11 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Anne was born in Annapolis, Maryland where her father was a math professor at the United States Naval Academy. There, she met her husband, Clay, who graduated from the Naval Academy in 1939. Anne and Clay were married in Honolulu on June 12, 1941 while Clay was stationed at Pearl Harbor. Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Clay served in the Pacific Theater while Anne returned home to await the end of the war. Upon Clay's retirement from the Navy after a distinguished 20 year career, Clay and Anne returned to Clay's home of Little Rock. Clay joined the family business, T. J. Raney & Sons, where he enjoyed a second career of 35 years and ultimately served as the President of the Company. Anne loved Little Rock and it became her home for 50 years. She was an accomplished artist. Anne was the great-granddaughter of the tenth President of the United States, President John Tyler, and Julia Gardiner Tyler. She was a member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, a Third Order Lay Carmelite, and she was instrumental in starting the Ecumenical Lecture Series.
Visitation and rosary will be held October 16, 2009 at Christ the King Church. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The rosary will follow at 7:00 p.m. The funeral will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2009 at Christ the King Church. Msgr. Francis I. Malone, Fr. John Michael Payne, O.C.D., and Fr. Raphael Kitz, O.C.D. will concelebrate the funeral mass. Burial will be at Roselawn Cemetary. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Joseph's Helpers or to the Discalced Carmelite nuns
