Dr. Jeremiah Burson Adcock was born January 24, 1848 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama and was the fourth child of John Skinner Adcock and Judith Ann Evans. He adopted the nickname of "James". At the age of 16, he served in Captain Bird Ford's Mounted Infantry Randolph Reserves (Home Guard) as a 2nd Corporal. On September 9, 1869 he married Lurena Frances "Fannie" Abbett, daughter of Littleton Berry Abbett and Sarah Elizabeth Caroline Land, also of the Tallapoosa area. He had been raised a Methodist but Fannie's father was a Baptist preacher and he became a Baptist for the rest of his life. The following year, 1870, he and Fannie joined a wagon train which took them to Union Parish, LA. During the trip their first child was born. In 1877 he graduated from National University of Arts and Sciences, Medical Department, St. Louis: American Medical College as a Doctor of Allopathy. He and his family lived in Farmerville, LA where he practiced medicine and owned a pharmacy. He and Fannie had four boys and one girl. On November 9, 1882 he died suddenly at the age of thirty-four while returning from seeing a patient out in the country and was buried in the Farmerville area. A tombstone was erected according to his granddaughter Maggie Adcock Austin. To date no tombstone has been found for him, leaving in question the exact place of interment.
