Mr. Grover C. Lancaster, Jr., 95, passed away Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family. A lifelong resident of Craven County, Grover was a US Army veteran of WWII, and married Peggy while stationed in England. Grover was an active member of his community, an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family. He was a charter member of the Vanceboro Fire Department and the Vanceboro VFW Post 11119, where he was Post Commander. He was a founding member of Craven County Hospital, and a longtime Craven County Commissioner, serving from 1962-1982, during which time he was Chairman from 1970-78 and President of the NC Association of County Commissioners in 1981. Grover was also a member and former President of the Fire Tax Commission, Craven County Board of Adjusters, The College of Knowledge, Vanceboro Rotary and was a faithful member of Vanceboro Masonic Lodge #433 and a Master Mason. He was the oldest living member of Vanceboro UMC, and attended Beech Grove UMC for many years. In recognition for a fine life, Grover was presented the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Gov. James E. Holhouser, Jr. He attended NC State, a member of the Century Club and was a lifelong Wolfpack fan. Sadly, Grover was preceded in death by his wife, Frances "Peggy" Hill Lancaster in 1997, son-in-law, William "Bill" Pike in 2002, and his brother Rodman "Doc" Lancaster in 2012. Grover is survived by his two daughters, Catherine L. Pike, of New Bern, NC; Jennifer L. Clay, of St. Augustine, FL; his brother, S. Jerome Lancaster, and wife Nancy, of Daytona, FL; and his dear friend Margaret Harrison, who shared his years later in life. Grover is also survived by his grandchildren, Kitti Pike Hardison, and husband Robbie, of New Bern, NC; Clifton Pike and wife Kathy, of New Bern, NC; his dear great grandchildren, Jay, Will, Josh, Cailee, Hunter; and Ryan; and several beloved nieces and nephews.Funeral services for Grover will be 2:00 PM, Saturday, August 1, 2015 at Beech Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Connie Stutts officiating. Burial with US Army Honors and Masonic Rites will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the committal and other times at the home of his daughter.
