Ailene P. DeLand, 84, of Battle Creek, died at Kairos Dwelling with her family at her side on Monday, October 12, 2009.
She was born December 6, 1924, in Charlotte, Michigan to Ernest R. and Sarah E. (Fowler) Davis. Ailene was raised in Charlotte and was a 1942 graduate of Charlotte High School. She came to Battle Creek after high school and graduated from Argubright Business College. Ailene was employed at the Kellogg Foundation 1944-1952, Battle Creek Area Hospital Funds 1962-1971 and also by South Central Michigan Health Planning Council 1966-1971.
Ailene married Russell L. DeLand in Charlotte, MI on June 20, 1952. Surviving are Russ, her husband of 57 years; three daughters, Shelly (John) Hart of Midland, Gail (Daniel) Caulkett of Okemos and Janis (Douglas) Buhler of Loveland, CO; seven grandchildren, Dana Buhler, Ashley (Scott) Hart Miller, Jenna Caulkett, Benjamin Hart, Lisa Buhler, Amanda Caulkett and Matthew Hart; and a sister, Hazel Hamilton of Charlotte.
Ailene was a member of First United Methodist Church. She loved playing Bridge and took pride in being one of the first to attain the rank of Silver Life Master in Battle Creek. Ailene was a member duplicate bridge clubs in Battle Creek, Kalamazoo and Bradenton, Florida. She was an amazing woodworker. Ailene made playground equipment for her children, toys for her grandchildren, and designed and finished rooms and basements. She loved spending time with her family and was a dear friend to many. Ailene and Russ spent the past 14 winters in Brandenton, Florida.
At the request of the family, friends may call 4:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home.
Memorial services to celebrate Ailene's life will be officiated by Rev. Robert Consani 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 15, 2009 at Ft. Custer National Cemetery.
