James Humphreys Hughes, 74 years of age, farmer of route 1, Amherst county, died at Lynchburg Hospital Sunday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock following an operation.
Mr. Hughes was born February 3, 1854 in Fluvanna county, the son of John C. and Mrs. Susan Duvall Hughes of Goochland county. He married Miss Alberta Oglesby in June, 1883, who died in January 1918.
He was a member of the Baptist church.
One brother, Richard Hughes, of Texas, and the following children survive: Mrs. Sallie Cox, James D. and Roy Hughes and Miss Florence Hughes of Lynchburg; Mrs. Lawrence Wray, of San Francisco, Cal.; Mrs. M.N. McCutcheon, of Enfield, N.C.; Calvin Hughes of Langley Field; Erskine Hughes of the United States Navy; W.E. Hughes of Roanoke.
All of the children are in the city except Erskine Hughes and Mrs. Wray. Burial will be in Trinity church cemetery, Boonsboro.
