Joseph H. Athmann, 110, of Melrose and formerly of Spring Hill, died Wednesday, Sept. 2, at the Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose. The Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 5, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spring Hill, with the Rev. Leo Leisen officiating. Casket bearers, cross bearer, and Scripture bearer were his great-grandchildren. Honorary bearers were John Heinen, Robert Bertram, Dan Hemmesch, Allen Lembeck, Duane Moscho, and Jim and Ray Welle. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Joseph Athmann was born on March 23, 1888, in Spring Hill Township, Stearns County, Minn., to Bernard and Veronica (Heinze) Athmann.

He married Anna Waldorf on Oct. 28, 1913, at St. Michael's Church in Spring Hill, and farmed for six years in Spring Hill Township. They moved to Spring Hill, where he was employed by the state of Minnesota, maintaining Highway 4 until 1932. Anna died in 1923.

Joseph married Susan Waldorf on Nov. 25, 1924, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spring Hill. They bought 61 acres near Spring Hill and farmed until his retirement.

He had resided at the Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose for the past seven years. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, St. Michael's Men's Society for 80 years, and served as the treasurer for the city of Spring Hill for 31 years.

Survivors include four children, Arnold of Melrose, Wilfred (Lucille) of Spring Hill, Rita Ritter of St. Rosa, and Genevieve Nathe of Circle Pines; brother, Al of Melrose; 19 grand-children; six step-grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his spouses, Anna Athmann in 1923, and Susan Athmann on May 9, 1973; children, Richard, Catherine and Barbara in infancy; brothers and sisters, Henry, Katie Michaels, Veronica Kochman, Theresa Wander, Lena Bohlig, John, Hubert, and Christ; and one step-great-grandchild.
