Edward was a son of Henry Spradling and Mary Martin. Some believe he was born in Kentucky, but (1) he consistently told census takers he had born in Virginia, and (2) both his immediately older and immediately younger siblings did the same.

Edward married Eliza Greer 28 October 1839 in Barren County, Kentucky, and they had seven children:

Mary Temperance
Gemima (or Jemima)
James
Moses Wade
John Edward
Sarah Ann Elizabeth
