John went to school in Hondo at Leinweber Elementary, then to Yancy where he played football and graduated in 1925 after the 9th grade. He remembered riding to town on a wagon once a week where he was allowed a $.05 red soda. He moved to San Antonio where he went to work for Steves Sash and Door for 6 months. Then to a candy company for $8.00 a week. 11-25-1925 he went to work for Universal Bookbindery for $10.00 a week. He worked at Universal until his retimement in 1972.
John remembered as a young man sitting on the porch hearing his dad play the fiddle and learning to play himself. Soon he was good enough to earn money ($4.00 a night). He played with his cousins and uncle at a dance hall. In 1935 he joined the "Twilight Blenders Band" and was playing on the radio. In 1941 they disbanded during the war because they could not get gas for their trips.
