Balch. The sudden demise of George V. Balch has filled with sorrow many hearts, not only in this city, but elsewhere. Bright, genial, generous and loving, there was a magnetism about him which attracted all with whom he came in contact. Many of his noble traits were no doubt inherited from his sturdy Scotch ancestors, who were the first settlers in old historic Georgetown. As early as 1703 a grant of the upper part of the town was made to Ninian Beall and was named by him The Rock of Dunbarton. The name of his great-grandfather, Rev. Dr. Balch, is still revered as the pioneer minister of the Gospel, under whom all denominations united. He came to the town in 1779 and preached in the Bridge Street Presbyterian Church for more than half a century.
We will be patient and assuage the feeling
We may not wholly stay;
By silence sanctifying, not concealing,
The grief that must have way.
