Maximilian Karl Franz Michael Hubert Anton Ignatius Joseph Maria, Herzog (German for Duke) von Hohenberg, was the elder son of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary and his wife morganatic wife, Sophie, Hergozin (Duchess) von Hohenberg, born Countess Sophie Chotek von Chotkowa und Wognin. He was excluded from succession to the Austro-Hungarian throne because of the morganatic status of his parents marriage which also deprived him of any of his father's titles, although not from the Archduke's personal estate nor from his mother's property.

He was married on November 16, 1926 in Wolfegg, to Grafin (Countess) Maria Elisabeth Bona von Waldburg zu Wolfegg und Waldsee. They had six sons.
