F. William "Bill" Honsowetz

Bill Honsowetz passed away in Eugene on October 7, 2009. He was born to Frank and Mary Marguerite Honsowetz on June 23, 1944, in Bremerton, Washington. He is survived by his wife, Rhonda Honsowetz; his two sisters, Barbara Miller and Virginia Blodgett of Waitsburg, Washington; and two stepchildren, Kimberly Bull of California and Nathan Jenkins of Eugene.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, October 17, 2009 at Shadow Hills Country Club from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Casual or Duck Game day attire is welcome.

Bill served in the U.S. Army as a First Lieutenant from 1966 to 1968. He was an Interrogations Officer in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968, and was fluent in Vietnamese.

He completed his formal education as a graduate from Washington State University in 1966 and from the University of Oregon Law School in 1972.

Bill also was a member of the Oregon State Bar beginning in 1972, as well as a Board Member of the Oregon Trial Lawyer's Association from 1978 to 1988, and served as President of the Oregon Trail Lawyer's Association in 1982-83.

Bill was listed in the 5th Edition of Who's Who in American Law and was a speaker at various Trial Lawyer and Oregon State Board Seminars, including the Master's Seminar in Los Angeles for the California Trial Lawyer's Association in 1983.

Bill was a Board Member of the Lane County Public Defender's Board from 1996 to 2009 and served a Chairman of the Public Defender's Board from 1999 to 2009.

Bill was also a Board Member of Lane County Fair Board from 1977 to 1988, serving most of those years as President.

Bill was also an avid University of Oregon Duck Fan, and was a Lifetime Member of the Oregon Club of Eugene-Springfield. He served as an Oregon Club Board Member for many years and was Oregon Club President in 2005. He was quite passionate about the Ducks and also volunteered his time to counsel University of Oregon student athletes. His tailgaters at Autzen Stadium, complete with oven roasted turkeys, were legendary. Bill was the ultimate host.

Bill was a passionate golfer and could be found on the golf course at Shadow Hills Country Club on Thursdays and nearly every weekend -- with the first tee time, of course. He had two holes-in-one in his lifetime -- one of which he had while attending law school and the most recent one on the 12th hole at Shadow Hills on August 16, 2009. Shadow Hills was a place Bill loved for many years and enjoyed numerous rounds of golf with friends. He served as a Shadow Hills Board Member from 1984 to 1992 and was President in 1991. Bill also served as the Shadow Hills club attorney for many years, and was instrumental in the club membership purchasing the course from Bohemia Timber Company in the 1980's, thus securing the strength and vitality that Shadow Hills and its members enjoy today.

Bill had many passions, but none more important than his family and friends. He was the master of telling jokes to anyone and everyone who would lend an ear, and was often the one laughing the hardest at the punch line. He could be found most early evenings "holding court" at the Waterfront Bar & Grill. While sometimes known for his tough outer shell, Bill was an incredibly caring and giving individual. He had a deep love for his dogs and all animals in general. There are literally thousands of people throughout Lane County and beyond who have been helped and touched by Bill Honsowetz -- from his family, to his clients, to his legal peers and constituents, to his friends and numerous charitable and civic organizations, to his country that he served. "Honso", as he was known by many, was truly one of a kind in every sense, and will be sorely missed by all.

Donations can be made in Bill's name to Greenhill Humane Society or the Glaucoma Research Foundation.
