CAPT. JOHN CHILDE, fourth child and son of Zachariah and Lydia Bigelow Child, b. in West Boylston, Mass., Aug. 30, 1802, m. Mch. 13, 1832, Laura Dwight, b. Dec. 23, 1809, dau. of James Scott and Mary Sanford Dwight of Springfield, Mass. Mr. Childe added the terminal "e" to his name, which is really the only correct addition to be made. He was a graduate of West Point. He was 1st Lieut. and Capt. in the U. S. army, and a superior civil engineer. He constructed "The Western Railroad," (from Pittsfield to Albany) the "Connecticut River Railroad," and also "The Cleaveland & Columbus Railroad," and "The Mobile & Ohio Railroad," the last (three hundred miles long) being his great work as an engineer. He was a man of high toned character, well educated, very energetic, and generous in the use of his means. Mrs. Laura D. Childe was lost in the "Arctic," Sept. 27, 1854, with her daughter, Lelia Maria Childe, on her return voyage from a tour of pleasure through Europe. He m. Oct. 23, 1856, his second wife, Ellen Wills Healy. Capt. John Childe d. at Springfield, Mass, Feb. 2, 1858.
