According to the inscription on his grave marker, Captain Ely was killed on the Mohawk River "In the service of his Country" on 18 October 1780. The Mohawk River is a tributary of the Hudson River in Lewis County New York. He is buried in the Park Street Cemetery which is in what is now West Springfield, MA next to the First Congregational Church. This church was founded in 1698 and contains quite a number of Revolutionary War Patriots, their families and descendants.

Levi is the fifth child of Samuel & Abigail Warriner Ely. He was killed by the Indians in a battle on the Mohawk River, a little East of Utica, NY, Oct. 19, 1780. He left home in the charge of a company, a short expidition against the Indians, all being his townsmen and neighbors, and they were all nearly killed only a few days before their term expired. Levi lived in West Springfield, at the foot of a hill, near the old Congregational church. All his children were born there, and lived and died in West Springfield, except his daughter Lucretia, and his son Elihu.

He married Abigail SERGEANT, Oct. 12, 1758. She is the daughter of Lieutenat John & Abigail JONES Sergeant.

Levi & Abigail had eleven children: Lucretia, Huldah, Jerusha, Levi, George, Daniel, Sabra, Theodosia, Solomon, Elihu, & Abigail "Nabby," who never married.
