Doris graduated from Washington University in 1943 with an A.B. and M.A. in English and Education. She began teaching at Affton High School in 1943 and retired in 1985 after 42 years of dedicated service. Miss Ahrens became the chairman of the English Department in 1955.
She made many contributions to Affton, including teaching Advanced Composition, English Literature and Contemporary Authors. She was the senior class sponsor her first ten years, sponsor of the Honor Society for fourteen years, advisor to Scholar Quiz Team, sponsored the yearbook for seven years and the Affton Literary Magazine for many years.
In 1983, a scholarship in her name was set up by the Honor Society to commemorate her 40th year at Affton High School. She will be fondly and greatfully remembered by her former students and colleagues. She was a true professional and an exemplary teacher. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a women's honorary education organization.
Services: Visitation at KUTIS AFFTON CHAPEL, 10151 Gravois, Friday, October 9, 4-8 p.m., then taken to Laclede Groves Chapel, 723 S. Laclede Station Road on Saturday, October 10, for visitation at 9:00 a.m. until time of service at 10:00 a.m. (conducted by her former students). Burial at Sunset Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations to Doris L. Ahrens Fund, Affton Education Foundation, 8701 Mackenzie, Affton, MO. 63123 or L.L.S.S. Hospice, 1150 Hanley Industrial Ct., St. Louis, MO 63144 appreciated.
